Award Description
The Citation for Outstanding Service to the Society recognizes individuals for dedicated service to the Society over a sustained period of time. Particular emphasis is to be placed on service performed at the Section level.
Award Citation
The 2019 Citation for Outstanding Service to the Society is awarded to John Wesley Shike in recognition of his efforts to recruit and engage Student Members and young professionals. A former educator, John brings both knowledge and insight to this initiative. As SMPTE Membership Director for Educators and Educational Institutions, he has established connections and initiated outreach to several educational institutions, resulting in the formation of the DeAnza College Student Chapter. Building on this effort, John produced SMPTE’s first Media Forward event for students and young professionals on the West Coast at DeAnza College in 2019, with more than 100 students, educators, and industry professionals in attendance.
Honoree Bio
John W. Shike is a key account manager at Advanced Systems Group LLC, a leading installer of production, post-production, and shared storage solutions, and is the Director of Educators and Educational Institutions for SMPTE’s membership committee. John has been involved with SMPTE for more than 30 years in his roles of sales, marketing, product management and teaching professional media technology. John works with the global SMPTE organization through his work on the membership committee and on a local basis through his participation with the San Francisco section. In addition to SMPTE, John has been involved in SBE, VSF, AMWA, and other organizations that have been essential to the development of new media technologies and the standards that serve as the backbone to the industry of professional media.
