Established in 2012 and renamed in 2017, the James A. Lindner Archival Technology Medal, sponsored by James A. Lindner, honors the recipient by recognizing significant technical advancements or contributions related to the invention or development of technology, techniques, workflows, or infrastructure for the long-term storage, archive or preservation of media content essence.
Award Citation
The 2019 James A. Lindner Archival Technology Medal is awarded to Ralph Sargent in recognition of his more than four decades of contributions to the preservation of motion pictures. In 1971, Sargent founded the Film Technology Company, a laboratory specializing in the restoration of film images. He authored “Preserving the Moving Image, the first book to seriously consider the subject of preservation from a technical perspective. Sargent did one of the earliest restorations of two-color Technicolor, developed solutions for recovery of lenticular color, and participated in the preservation of Academy Award broadcasts from 2-in. tape. Sargent has worked with and informed several generations of archivists.
Honoree Bio
Ralph Sargent joined the staff of the Motion Picture Division of UCLA Theatre Arts Department and taught studio production, cinematography and the science of photography. Developed and patented an automatic exposure control system for Kalvar printers. In 1971 he established Film Technology Co., Inc. a motion picture restoration laboratory specifically designed to tackle difficult projects and obsolete techniques. Film Technology Co also specialized in reproducing defunct audio and videotape formats and copying them to more modern methods of reproduction. Mr. Sargent authored “Preserving the Moving Image,” the first book to seriously consider the subject of preservation from a technical perspective. Sargent did one of the earliest restorations of two-color Technicolor, developed solutions for recovery of lenticular color, and participated in the preservation of Academy Award broadcasts from 2-in. tape. Sargent has worked with and informed several generations of archivists.
