DESCRIPTION:In December 2018\, 4K/8K Ultra-High-Definition TV (UHDTV) satel
lite broadcasts started in Japan\, where the 8K UHDTV broadcasts are the f
irst in the world. The 8K UHDTV system requires transmission channels with
much larger capacity than the conventional 2K HDTV system. \nFor these re
asons\, we developed a new broadcasting system that employs 16APSK modulat
ion scheme to achieve high-frequency efficiency and MMT protocol with high
compatibility to IP and HEVC video coding with a high efficiency compress
ion performance.\nFor the maximum use of the existing satellite TV frequen
cy band\, we newly employ left-handed circularly polarized (LHP) radio wav
es in addition to right-handed circularly polarized (RHP) radio waves that
have been used for satellite broadcasts in Japan. For reception\, new sat
ellite reception antennas that enable the reception of LHP and RHP satelli
te radio waves are developed. The IF frequency band of the antenna of the
Outdoor Unit (ODU) has been expanded from 2.1 GHz to 3.2 GHz.\nAntenna com
ponent manufacturers produce many kinds of accessories\, such as receiving
  antennas\, boosters\, multiway splitters\, and F-connector outlets\, that
meet the performance required in the industry standard 'SH marking system
(Quality approval mark for Super Hi-vision(4K/8K) reception)”.Since the S
H mark indicates that the products have the sufficient performance to rece
ive 4K/8K UHDTV broadcasts stably with robustness to the interference caus
ed by 2.4-GHz-band Wi-Fi\, etc.\, the products also achieve low transmissi
on loss in the expanded higher frequency band. An SH mark sticker on a pro
duct helps consumers to choose appropriate products for the reception of 4
 K/8K UHDTV satellite broadcasts.\nThe new broadcasting satellite BSAT-4a w
ith 200-W-class TWTAs was launched on September 30\, 2017 (Japan time).\nT
hese TWTAs are operated at an output back-off of 2.2 dB to fully exploit t
he performance of 16APSK.\nFor large-scale apartment complexes\, there are
cases where existing coaxial cables and RF boosters don’t have sufficient
bandwidth for 4K/8K satellite UHDTV broadcasts to transfer satellite TV s
ignals to each household from a shared dish antenna on the rooftop. \nThe
replacement of such in-house equipment is hugely burdensome. Currently\, s
ome reasonably priced plastic-optical fibers and frequency converters are
under development as new in-house transmitting equipment.\nIn this present
ation\, we introduce details of the technical aspects of the equipment and
technical standards that support the new 4K/8K satellite UHDTV broadcast
 in Japan.
